Research Project with Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay)
The goal of this project is to test approximately 6,000 groundwater sources (borewells and handpumps) in the Reoti, Belhari, and Dubhand blocks of Ballia District to assess arsenic contamination in drinking water.
Project Phases
Phase 1: District-Wide Screening
Approximately 3,000 water sources will be tested across villages in the three study blocks. The objective is to obtain broad geographical coverage and identify areas with potential arsenic contamination.
Phase 2: Intensive Investigation
Based on the Phase 1 results, an additional 3,000 water quality tests will be conducted in areas showing elevated arsenic levels. This phase will help identify contamination hotspots and understand local patterns in greater detail.
Phase 3: Risk Mapping and Community Outreach
The results will be used to prepare detailed arsenic risk maps and support community awareness, safe water planning, and future mitigation efforts.
Project Duration
The project began in May 2026 and is expected to take approximately one year to complete.
